Platinum vs Gold

Platinum vs Gold is a very personal choice.  Platinum is generally more expensive than gold as it is heavier (therefore uses more) and it is usually 95% pure when made into jewellery, compared to 75% for 18ct gold.  However there are pro’s and cons to both.

Platinum will wear better than gold over the decades as it is a more dense metal.  Platinum is a much whiter metal than white gold, but it does have a grayish appearance when it wears.

White gold has a yellowish appearance in its raw form.  This is why most white gold is rhodium plated, which gives it a very white appearance.  Rhodium plating is however only a temporary plating and will wear over time. This is why we use a Platinum based white gold which is white even in its raw form and doesn’t need a Rhodium plating new or at any point over time.

From a personal point of view, we feel that a brand new white gold ring looks sharper than a brand new platinum ring.  However the real benefit of a platinum ring is its durability over time.

All in all, both metals produce a stunning look and it is important to keep your jewellery clean and polished.

There has always been this perceived belief that Platinum is a superior metal to gold, and it is commonly used by the rich and famous.  Perceptions aside, white gold can look just as stunning and in many cases it is still a preference in its look.

Does Gold scratch easier than Platinum

There is a bit of a myth out there that Platinum is harder than gold, and therefore doesn’t scratch as easily.  Platinum is actually softer than gold but it is more dense in nature.  Therefore it scratches just as easily as gold but the metal only displaces rather than wears away with a scratch.

In conclusion, both are very nice metals, but both need to be maintained to look their best.  The cost of maintenance is very similar.  Platinum will last longer over time and has a heavier feel to it.  The rest of the decision is just a personal choice and to many, a cost related issue.

Beauty vs Practicality

SONY DSCOften in the world of engagement rings, jewellers constantly try to get a good balance between what looks good, and what will work well.  The US market tends to have their diamonds set very high as they want to show them off.  The NZ market prefers them a little lower as there is a perceived safety with this style.  The key here is that the ring should look well balanced with the diamonds.  A low set diamond, even though perceived as safer, can look a little flat and hides the beauty of the diamond.

Its definitely important to ensure the ring is practical to the lifestyle of your partner, but at the end of the day she wants her friends to say “Wow, what a beautiful looking ring”, and not “Wow, what a practical looking ring”.

At Global Diamonds, our jewellers work tirelessly to ensure every engagement ring is made and finished with amazing balance and proportions.

Our design team, led by Robyn, with many years of Jewellery design in Whangarei under her belt will be able to guide you in your decision.

Treatments That Can Change Diamond Colours

8179-8181 copyWhen you purchase a white diamond ring, one of the factors that affects its value is its colour. The whiter the diamond, or the more colourless it is, the greater its value will be. The whitest diamonds allow a greater amount of light to pass through for a better sparkle and shine. These diamonds are rare, unlike diamonds with brownish or yellowish tones.

Fancy coloured diamonds are also extremely rare and expensive, but are not colourless. Instead, these diamonds are at the other end of the spectrum. Their value actually increases with their colour, which can range from bright yellow to blue to green.

The diamonds for your engagement rings are rated on an alphabetical scale, with D being the highest rating a white diamond can receive. The most expensive white diamonds are generally rated D, E, or F, while those with traces of brown or yellow in them are rated farther down the alphabetical scale, all the way to Z.

Because colourless diamonds are much more valuable, the jewellery industry has created a few methods for turning those lower scale diamonds into ones that are slightly more fancy. While some of these methods have been around for quite some time, others have only recently been developed.

Diamond Treatments

Colour Tricks and Coatings

Sometimes, the diamonds in your engagement rings may be covered with a coating that makes it difficult to see yellow traces in the diamond. This coating is applied with heat, but will eventually wear off over time.

Coloured dots of blue or purple ink can be painted onto diamonds to reduce the amount of yellow you are able to see. These dots are generally placed in areas that are obscured by the engagement ring setting, and are not permanent; they can generally be removed with cleaning solutions and water.

These diamond treatments are often not revealed to buyers before they make a purchase and are often used to deceive them.

Irradiation and High Heat

Sometimes jewellers turn ho-hum diamonds into fancy coloured diamonds through the use of irradiation, or exposing the diamond to radiation, and high heat. Most often, if the diamond isn’t exposed to high heat again during its life, the diamond will remain the fancy colour.

This trick generally isn’t used to deceive customers, but instead to allow those who can’t afford the price tag on fancy coloured engagement rings in NZ the opportunity to have a beautiful coloured diamond. However, those who purchase this kind of diamond need to understand that it is not a natural fancy coloured diamond and is not an investment.

High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)

This controversial way of changing the colour of the diamonds in your engagement rings in NZ isn’t new, but the way the process is being used is. When this technique, which is similar to irradiation and high temperature treatments was first used to turn diamonds with yellow traces into fancy coloured ones, it is now capable of turning browning diamonds into colourless and expensive diamonds.

Steps are continually being taken to ensure that every buyer of engagement rings receives full disclosure about their diamonds and is not tricked into purchasing a diamond that has been artificially altered. The diamonds that are altered now must be laser inscribed with “irradiated” or “HPHT processed” or the name of a registered user in order to actually be graded.

While you may have thought a diamond was simply a diamond, when you purchase an engagement ring in NZ, you need to understand that some diamonds are altered to increase their value. Make sure you obtain full disclosure on your diamond ring so you can be sure you are buying the right one.

The Only Proposal Guide You Will Ever Need to Read

SONY DSC

For the most part, men understand how to propose to a woman. It’s a simple process. You purchase an engagement ring, find the perfect spot, and ask for her hand in marriage. Many women are looking to be surprised with so much more, though. While a proposal doesn’t necessarily need to be expensive or over-the-top, you should put your own unique spin on it. Keep in mind, “How did he ask you?” will be a question she’ll be answering for years.

How to Propose: The Essential Guide

Proposing to the woman of your dreams can play on your nerves; even if you’re confident she’ll say yes. Planning each step of the proposal is a fantastic way to shake off some of those nerves and prepare for one of the most memorable nights of your life. Here is an essential guide to help you pick out the perfect engagement ring and plan the perfect proposal.

  • Don’t Tell Your Friends- A proposal is almost always a surprise, so keep it that way. This will make it much less likely that someone will accidentally let your secret slip. You may want to discuss your intentions with her parents, but telling your friends can be a mistake.
  • Purchasing the Ring- Engagement rings come in various shapes and styles. Choose a diamond and setting that fits her style. If you need help, consult her mother or her best friend, as long as they are able to keep it a secret.
  • Hollywood It- Does she have a favourite movie? Many women are hopeless romantics and take cues from the movies they watch. If you can, find out what her favourite romantic movie is and take notes from it. This may sound like incredibly sappy advice, but take our word for it, she will be overjoyed.
  • Personalize It- Think about intimate secrets, jokes, or places you’ve shared together. Is there a particular park bench where you first met? Did you two use to play on a certain playground when you were children? Was your first date at the ice skating rink? Taking her back in time to the moment you first met can be an incredible place to propose.
  • Pay Attention to the Details- Once you decide how you are going to propose, make sure to pay attention to those little details that can take your proposal from ordinary to extraordinary. Recreate moments from your first date, first kiss, or even the first day you moved in together.
  • Capture It- Want to preserve the proposal for a lifetime? Make sure to record it. Have a friend, preferably someone she isn’t familiar with, record the event from a distance or set up a video recorder yourself.

With a little imagination and this helpful guide, you can select the perfect engagement ring, plan the perfect proposal, and confidently ask her to be yours forever.

How did you propose to the love of your life? We’d love to hear your story.
